Team in Ghent
Carpet of Life is a fair design brand. We are based in Ghent and work without borders. The production of a unique designer piece is transparent and sustainable!
In Belgium, we - the enthusiastic and entrepreneurial sisters Hendrikje and Marion - are managing the Carpet of Life brand since 2015. We put our daily effort into guiding the process from Belgium to Morocco and back to make sure that your wardrobe and personal story travel safely to the desert and come back as your Carpet of Life.

Team in M'Hamid
A vital part of Carpet of Life is our local Team in M’hamid. We have been working with local Carpet of Life assistants Zeineb, Meryem, Nazha & Zahra since 2012, building a long lasting and sustainable relationship. In day to day activities they are supporting our Carpet of Life interns in monitoring production and communicating with our craftswomen. They also play a vital role in women’s ceremonies and keeping up the group spirit of the project. Carpet of Life aims to make the local assistants as self sufficient as possible. We train them and try to increase their independence and confidence. Our assistants have big smiles and beautiful faces, but asked us not to publish portrait photos due to cultural differences. Of course Carpet of Life respects that.
Since I work as a projectleader for Carpet of Life, I have more responsibilities and feel that my job is valuable for M’Hamid and the villages around. Besides, I learned to understand the ideas of others and work together in a creative way.
Trough Carpet of Life, we got to know a lot of new people, they often influence our work in a positive way, by exchanging creativity. And I’m very happy to explain them about Carpet of Life and tell them what we do. Through these experiences, I also learn to communicate better in English and French.
In this region many women are not married, because their partners passed away or are working in the cities. Through Carpet of Life, women are able to take responsibility for their family to sustain them and in that way they are more independent.
The oasis of M’hamid El Ghizlane in the south of Morocco consists of ten different villages. Women from 4 of these villages participate in making carpets for Carpet of Life. Through Carpet of Life, the traditions and craft culture is retained. The women are able to show the big potential of their creativity. By sharing their creativity they gain new aspirations and they are connected to other worlds.
The region was hit by many hardships in the past including draught. As a result of this, many men left the region and women stayed behind dividing their time over household activities and small scale farming.
In order to develop again a prosperous local economy it is crucial to empower these local women, and create new opportunities. Carpet of Life sees this opportunity in creating a brand that builds upon the pride of the local community, and so reviving and fostering the cultural life and tradition to build a better future.
